Get Expert Review of What’s New in CPT® 2017 for Pathology

CPT® code changes are key from year to year in the coding/billing process. In this session, expert speaker Marchelle Cagle will go over these changes and explain additions, deletions, and revisions for greater understanding concerning pathology/laboratory changes. Every year the OIG Office of Investigator General highlights certain areas or topics that the agency concentrates on. These changes that are applicable will be discussed to prepare you in any way that may affect payer/vendor contracts, reimbursement or documentation. Drug Test Coding and Coverage can have limitations on the amount of tests that are ordered and paid, this session will cover these limitations and their requirements

Session Highlights:

  • 2017 CPT® code additions for Pathology
    • 36456 - Partial exchange transfusion, blood, plasma or crystalloid necessitating the skill of a physician or other qualified health care professional, newborn
    • 80305 - Drug test(s), presumptive, any number of drug classes, any number of devices or procedures (eg, immunoassay); capable of being read by direct optical observation only (eg, dipsticks, cups, cards, cartridges) includes sample validation when performed, per date of service
    • 88306 - Drug test(s), presumptive, any number of drug classes, any number of devices or procedures (eg, immunoassay); read by instrument assisted direct optical observation (eg, dipsticks, cups, cards, cartridges), includes sample validation when performed, per date of service
  • 2017 CPT® code deletions for Pathology
    • 80300 - Drug screen, any number of drug classes from Drug Class List A; any number of non-TLC devices or procedures, (eg, immunoassay) capable  of being read by direct optical observation, including instrumented-assisted when performed (eg, dipsticks, cups, cards,  cartridges), per date of service
    • 80301 - Drug screen, single drug class method, by instrumented test systems (eg, discrete multichannel chemistry analyzers utilizing immunoassay or enzyme assay), per date of service
    • 80302 - Drug screen, presumptive, single drug class from Drug Class List B, by immunoassay (eg, ELISA) or non-TLC chromatography without mass spectrometry (eg, GC, HPLC), each procedure
  • 2017 CPT® code revisions for Pathology
    • 81401 - Molecular pathology procedure, Level 2 (eg, 2-10 SNPs, 1 methylated variant, or 1 somatic variant [typically using nonsequencing target variant analysis], or detection of a dynamic mutation disorder/triplet repeat)
    • 81403 - Molecular pathology procedure, Level 4 (eg, analysis of single exon by DNA sequence analysis, analysis of >10 amplicons using multiplex PCR in 2 or more independent reactions, mutation scanning or duplication/deletion variants of 2-5 exons) Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor  (KIR) gene family (eg, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation), genotyping of KIR family genes Known familial variant not otherwise specified, for gene listed in Tier 1 or Tier 2, or identified during a genomic sequencing procedure, DNA sequence analysis, each variant exon
    • 81406 - Molecular pathology procedure, Level 7 (eg, analysis of 11-25 exons by DNA sequence analysis, mutation scanning or duplication/deletion variants of 26-50 exons, cytogenomic array analysis for neoplasia)
KCNH2 (potassium voltage-gated channel, subfamily H [eag-related], member 2) (eg, short QT syndrome, long QT syndrome), full gene sequence
KCNQ1 (potassium voltage-gated channel, KQT-like subfamily, member 1) (eg, short QT syndrome, long QT syndrome), full gene sequence
