CMS and private payers have stated that they will no longer be liberal with their processing of ICD-10 claims in 2017—for which the diagnosis claim year starts on October 1, 2016. This means that, not only do coders have to do their best job at accurate coding, but providers also have to do their best at detailed documentation so that the ICD-10 codes submitted are provided to the highest level of detail.
