Help Providers Supply Documentation Critical in Choosing the Highest Level of Specificity

There are many challenges for coding in ICD-10, but the musculoskeletal system has the highest number of changes for any area. It is important that those utilizing these codes in ICD-10 are not only familiar with the requirements, but that they are assisting providers in the appropriate documentation to substantiate the information necessary for assigning the right codes(s). Everyone can look at this in other ways than before to help and aid in doing this coding right the first time to avoid denial, delay, or reduction of reimbursement due to lack of being specific enough in the diagnoses code(s) chosen.

The main reasons why the musculoskeletal system has the largest expansion of codes for ICD-10 is because of the need to report laterality and the specific part of the bone affected. Because these are requirements to code to the highest level of specificity, it is critical for those assigning these diagnosis codes to understand what will be needed in the documentation. Without the specifics, you could put your providers at risk of receiving a reduction in reimbursements.

In this session, expert speaker Lynn Anderanin, CPC, CPC-I, COSC will walk you through the ICD-10 coding for the upper and lower extremity and provide you with a better understanding of what to look for in the documentation, and how to deal with inadequate documentation in order to move forward with the ICD-10 coding. She will also review how the ICD-10 codes match up to the CPT® codes by body area involved assisting in even easier ways than before!
