Make Dispensing DME Manageable and Profitable for your Practice


Managing Durable Medical Equipment (DME) in the orthopedic office can be difficult, with physicians and staff giving patients DME and not remembering that these have to be billed. You must also decide who in the office will be managing the inventory to ensure DME is profitable, and not a financial loss to the practice. In this session, coding specialist Lynn M Anderanin, CPC, CPMA, CPC-I, CPPM, COSC will share with you some examples of what other practices have done to get the dispensing of DME manageable and profitable.

Unlike professional services, DME are a direct cost to the practice because these items have to be paid for based on an invoice. The office will then have DME stored in the office that is not paid for until a patient receives the item, and the patient or their insurance carrier pays for the item. There is minimal or no profit if not all DME are accounted for, and paid for. This session will help you create processes and procedures in your office to manage DME so that you receive maximum profit for these items while remaining compliant.

Lynn will walk through the whole process of dispensing DME in a practice without losing revenue, and instead making it profitable. She will go from taking a DME product and determining the HPCPS code, to assigning a charge. She will talk through the administrative parts of dispensing DME, like keeping track of what is being dispensed, when additional inventory has to be ordered, and making sure that either the insurance or the patient are paying for the item. This will give you a chance to create a complete program for dispensing DME.

Lynn has experience in creating a program for DME for a large orthopedic practice that had not only orthopedic surgeons, but podiatrists and therapists all dispensing DME. She has been through what worked and what didn’t to make the DME program in the practice profitable instead of a financial burden.
