ICD-10 Coding Tips for Obstetrics

Obstetric coding is difficult under ICD-9-CM rules, but it will become more specific under ICD-10-CM rules.  Knowing the guidelines will help, but hands-on practice will be the key to feeling comfortable with the new system and assigning codes that will not be denied due to lack of specificity. Applying the guidelines to actual cases, this 60 minute session will concentrate on how to convert physician documentation into specific diagnostic codes. In getting to practice with current cases, you will become comfortable with your diagnostic coding choices, and be ready to convert on October 1, 2015.

In this session, expert speaker Melanie Witt, RN, CPC, COBGC, MA will include a bonus reference which converts the ICD-9-CM OB codes into their ICD-10-CM equivalents. She will also review the physician documentation for obstetric cases to illustrate correct coding and provide innumerable examples to help you gauge the cases, among other things.

Topics covered in the session:

  • Abortion coding
  • Diabetes examples
  • Hypertensive disease in pregnancy
  • Coding for multiple gestation
  • Fetal anomalies
  • Typical complications during labor and delivery

Please feel free to submit case documentation at least 2 weeks prior to the workshop to have your coding dilemmas addressed within the context of ICD-10-CM at registration@audioeducator.com.

Get all the answers to your impending queries in a Q&A segment by the speaker after the session.
