Properly coding in the inpatient setting is crucial because specificity of coding is required for correct DRG reimbursement for inpatient procedures. CMS’s 2017 updates to ICD-10-PCS for 2018 were released in May 2017 and include over 3,500 new codes, more than 1,800 revisions and almost 650 deletions. ICD-10-PCS now includes over 78,700 codes. These are the codes that must be used for the “procedural classification system” in hospital inpatient settings starting on October 1, 2017.
