Burn patients are often clinically complex to manage. Depending on the extent of the burns, determining the correct diagnoses and services can provide challenges to the coder and biller. In this session, Dorothy D. Steed, will include selection of the correct diagnosis codes, determining total body surface area, late effects and complications. Additionally, she will review the most common procedures and documentation gaps that may present difficulty in coding accuracy.
Complete and clear documentation is the key to support the difficulty in management of the patient and directly affects the coder’s ability to capture the correct degree of specificity and level of care. This session will include examples of surgical procedures, skin graft & preparation and rehabilitation processes that are necessary to support the healing process.
