Best Practices for Bedbug Prevention and Control in a Healthcare Setting

Bedbugs are a particularly challenging pest. They can live in tight spaces, multiply quickly and have few enemies. Worse of all, they feed on the skin of humans, making them an extreme nuisance. And they can travel, living in the suitcases or clothes of travelers, infesting new areas and rooms. Bed bug infestation has become a serious problem in the U.S.—and not only in community housing but hospitals and other healthcare facilities as well.

Bedbugs do not transmit disease; therefore, states have a limited interest in controlling them. However, policy makers have been active on legislation to require disclosure of bedbugs and bedbug nuisances by property managers, hotel owners, landlords, and healthcare facilities.

Bed bugs are becoming increasingly common in the medical setting. Patients may be entitled to compensation, if they suffer an illness or injury due to bed bugs in a healthcare setting.

This session with expert speaker Doug Farquhar will look into the nature of bedbugs, government efforts to address the bedbug situation, and how the traveling public and the healthcare industry can protect itself from bedbugs.
