How to Create Documentation to Substantiate the Medical Necessity for Orthopedic Services and Allow the Correct Assignment of ICD-10 Codes

When it comes to ICD-10, a decision has to be made. Are you going to educate your orthopedic staff, how to code ICD-10, or are you going to instruct them on what will need to be documented for you to choose the right code(s)?

The musculoskeletal system has the most changes for ICD-10 due to the addition of laterality and the treatment status character for injuries. Providers have limited time in their busy schedule to get trained for ICD-10. To make the most of their time and yours, Lynn Anderanin, CPC, CPC-I, COSC, in this session, will discuss the differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10 as it relates to orthopedics and help you make critical decisions for an effective implementation.

During this 60-minute session, she will talk about how to work with your orthopedic surgeons on creating documentation to substantiate the medical necessity for services and procedures, and allow the correct assignment of ICD-10 codes for a clean claim. You will get tips on what may be currently lacking in orthopedic documentation and the need for everything from the EHR to the encounter form to match, as well as describe all of the possible diagnoses for each patient visit. You will study real medical records to determine the differences in the medical records from ICD-9 to ICD-10.

Plus, Lynn will discuss what is necessary to share with your providers to have what is needed on October 1st for coding to the highest level of specificity. You will know how to avoid payment reductions due to ICD-10 codes that do not prove medical necessity.
