CMS has issued new rules that impact the deadlines for “meaningful use” (MU) compliance under the financial incentive program offered by Medicare and Medicaid for EHR system. While the rules provide some flexibility for providers who are not ready for the next stage of compliance, they also leave in place some important deadlines as to waivers and program participation, and also change the timeline for future stages. As a result, providers may be justifiably confused as to what they need to do and when.
The new rules provide some additional time to adopt hardware and software upgrades to meet Stage 2 level requirements. They also change the timing of when Stage 2 compliance must start and the length of the compliance period. At the same time, they clarify the protocol for seeking exemption from MU compliance and confirm the new or enhanced functions that the new MU standards require. In addition, the rules verify the end date for seeking incentive money and when reduced physician reimbursement may commence due to non-compliance.
In this audio session, Wayne J. Miller, Esq. will highlight how the new rules affect MU compliance deadlines, availability of EHR incentive payments and their impact on future Medicare reimbursement. He will also discuss what providers need to do to delay Stage 2 obligations if necessary or to even qualify for an exemption. Critical upgrades to move on to the new stage will be highlighted as well as lessons learned from the meaningful use audit process.
