Here’s How You Can Incorporate Stage 2 Meaningful Use Standards Into Your Audit Preparation!

Contracted auditors continue prepayment as well as post-payment audits on behalf of CMS to evaluate whether EHR incentive recipients fulfil the standards for “meaningful use” (MU) requirements. Failure to substantiate the standards has already resulted in lost incentive money and in some cases, civil money penalties and loss of Medicare certification. States have also initiated MU audits of providers receiving Medicaid EHR incentives. Providers that fail to establish MU of electronic systems could also face reductions in payment rates in 2015.

With Stage 2 requirements slowly being implemented, Meaningful Use audits will soon begin to focus on compliance with the new obligations. In implementing Stage 2 changes in hardware or software, providers need to be familiar with functions that will require “percentage” testing for the first time, as well as functionalities that require proof that they are in place throughout the applicable attestation period.

With many providers already reviewed, lessons have been learned about how to be prepared and how best to avoid being tripped up. Further, the appeal process for failed audits can easily be lost at the early stages if providers are not diligent. In this audio session, expert speaker Wayne J. Miller, Esq. will discuss the EHR incentive audit program in detail as well as provide lessons from the field. He will also explain how to incorporate Stage 2 standards into audit preparation, and examine the appeal process if an audit goes badly.

Topics to be covered include:

  • The timeline and documentation to be submitted for a Meaningful Use audit
  • How do you prove “yes/no” functionality?
  • Ways to succeed in meeting minimum percentages
  • Top five areas in which audited providers have tripped up and how to avoid them
  •  Security Risk Assessments—EHR Technology, HIPAA requirements, and typical issues
  • Areas of focus for preparing for a Stage 2 Meaningful Use audit
  • Audit Procedure—audit targets, prepayment targets
  • Navigating the appeal maze following a failed audit
  • Discussion on possible penalties if the provider is noncompliant
  • Meaningful use audit tips—what not to do
  • Audit appeal—if “negative determination”, consider appeal
