It is important for family caregivers to understand the necessity of taking responsibility of their loved ones, as length of stay in hospital continue to shorten and patients are discharged at higher levels of acuity. Due to the rush of discharge planning, sometimes, medical units don’t take the time to assess the capabilities, availability and readiness of family caregivers. This information tends to be critical in discharge planning process. Some family caregivers may need additional education or assistance in caring for their loved one.
