CMS has recently published a 93 page advanced memo and they have rewritten all of the nursing and pharmacy standards for Critical Access Hospitals. This comprises of a new section on IV medication, safe opioid use, blood, and drugs and biologicals. This change is considered as the biggest in CAH standards since the inception of the program.

CAHs hospitals must comply with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services CoP for Critical Access Hospitals. The CMS regulations and interpretive guidelines serve as the basis for determining compliance.
