The problem of how to maintain produce shelf life during transportation has a long history. And when things go wrong during the sometimes long journey between the farm or packing house and the retail outlet, carriers are most likely to be blamed for any spoilage and adulteration that may occur during many supply chain hand off operations. The carrier’s ability to prove, to both the shippers and receivers, that temperatures were maintained within specified upper and lower temperature control limits is becoming more critical.
As the finalization of the FDA’s FSMA rules on the transportation of human and animal foods approaches, shippers, carriers and receivers of food by truck and rail will be required to establish updated procedures capable of maintaining a sanitary and temperature controlled food transportation system. With the trucking industry becoming the focus of execution of control procedures, changes to old food transportation practices will be required. No groups will be more heavily impacted than the produce industry and the carriers that provide their delivery needs. Delivery quality and food safety have come home to roost. Now is the time to upgrade!
In this session, expert speaker Dr. John M. Ryan will review temperature control studies from the farm to the retail outlet. With many technology companies vying to sell monitoring equipment, carriers need to know how to keep their costs low while complying with the law and customer requirements. The session will also review data, available hardware, benefits and costs, and help you find out which solution is best for your needs.
