Current food safety management systems, programs, such as ISO 22000, BRC, SQF, IFS and FSSC 22000, are popular and have some common elements and some differences. However, all these programs have their base ISO 22000 criteria. The GFSI food safety standards include regulatory requirements as appropriate for the countries of production and also destination. Development and implementation of the individual programs, procedures, documentation and management approaches are similar for each GFSI scheme.

The challenges companies face is realizing a logical and sequential approach for assessing current food safety programs against the standard of choice and then creating a plan for either development or modification of the existing programs.
