Inspections under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) will involve extensive audits of records, as well as facility observations. The use of whole genome sequencing, in trace backs from illness outbreaks, has greatly expedited the identification of food sources. The Dept. of Justice and FDA have partnered to bring criminal actions against corporate officials with the authority to prevent or correct food safety violations in a company, even without evidence that the corporate officials knew of unsafe food practices.
