The Food Safety Modernization Act

The goal of the FSMA, which became law in 2011, is to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply by preventing contamination. The FDA has released seven final rules that cover a range of activities relating to food for both humans and animals.

Food safety leaders and quality management and operations management personnel need to know the latest on:

  • FSMA preventive controls
  • HARPC food safety plans
  • Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP)
  • Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards
  • The FDA’s food defense rules
  • The FDA’s FSMA rules
  • Food defense mitigation strategies
  • Food defense plans
  • Vulnerability assessments
  • Food transportation compliance under the FSMA

Food Labeling

The FDA’s food labeling regulations and requirements represent one of the most important compliance areas for corporate and facility regulatory personnel, including QA staff, legal risk management professionals at food manufacturers and restaurant companies, and marketing professionals. Drastic changes to regulations in this area have created new food labeling compliance concerns, especially in the areas of:

  • Food service labeling
  • Nutrition labeling
  • Food labeling regulations and food labeling compliance
  • Allergen labeling
  • FDA packaging elements
  • Nutrition facts labeling
  • GMO labeling
  • Over the counter (OTC) drug labeling

Microbiology and Environmental Monitoring

Microbiology contamination control strategies and environmental monitoring plans are now a part of the food safety landscape. Do you have the latest microbial contamination guidance? The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food Safety and Inspection Service want to know. Your efforts in developing and utilizing a microbiology contamination risk assessment could make or break your lab, plant or company.

Furthermore, the FDA’s recently released FSMA Final Rule for Preventive Controls for Human Food is a game-changer, creating new requirements and revising previous ones for the production of human food by registered food facilities. Building on the Sanitary Food Transportation Act (SFTA), the FDA’s sanitary transportation rules have also changed the way shippers, loaders, motor and rail carriers, and receivers that transport human and animal food use sanitary practices in order make sure the food is safe.

Food/Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplement regulations have beset the industry, with the goal of ensuring the safety of a range of products that include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids and enzymes. The FDA itself needs close monitoring if your company produces dietary supplement products or ingredients. Topics covered by our expert speakers include:

  • Dietary supplement ingredients
  • Dietary supplement advertising rules
  • Dietary supplement good manufacturing practices (GMPs)
  • FDA warning letters relating to dietary supplements
  • FDA enforcement actions regarding dietary supplements

Import/Export Rules

The import and export of foods represent another hot spot for suppliers and manufacturers. The FDA regulates both importing and exporting activities, and companies involved in such activities regularly deal with:

  • The Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP)
  • The Foreign Supplier Control Program
  • HACCP issues
  • Food safety plans
  • The FDA’s FSMA food transportation rules
  • Foreign suppliers’ obligations under the FSMA
  • International import controls

Food Fraud

The FDA regulates fraud in the food industry in a variety of ways. New laws require food handlers, processors, retailers and restaurants to develop effective food fraud compliance systems to deal with intentional adulteration and mislabeling.

Food buyers and sellers, as well as retail purchasing groups, food testing labs and corporate management of restaurants need to understand the latest developments in:

  • The FDA’s Intentional Adulteration Rules
  • FDA Food Fraud Compliance Systems
  • Food fraud laws
  • Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) requirements
  • Food recalls
