The second thing is that it was really meant to help share things. Back then, it was about email and attaching documents and attaching files that might be of interest to others. But now we start to add the notion of photos and even music to a certain extent.

The least but not least is to offer opinion, commentary on certain things that are occurring. We can look at the uncontrollable economic issues that are abounding today; the political issues. Or, even interestingly enough, when natural disaster strikes.

And so today we have the notion of the “iReport” which was started by CNN. So people that are in the thick of natural disasters can instantly update the world about different things that are happening, i.e., the whole notion of social media.

Well, when we look at social media, what are some of the best known places that you can connect in? Well, the first one is Facebook. By and large, it is the biggest; probably more known for its personalization than anything else.

And if we look at it from the perspective of professional and personal, Facebook is mostly known for personal interactions, personal connections. You will probably see more instances of individuals that are involved in their kid's activities or wanting to create a rant about politics or economics more so than you would see on any of the professional sites.

However, if we look at it from this perspective, there are some professional sites that are listed on Facebook but more importantly are the demographics. And the demographics really show that people on 18 to 35, 40 are very, very connected on the Facebook websites but there are people in their 50's and 60's as well.

LinkedIn is probably known more for its professional aggregation. Most individuals there are making approximately $150,000 a year or more. And LinkedIn today has approximately 110 million or 125 million users connected and actively involved.

There's also MySpace. There's Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg, Bebo, iVillage and a host of many, many others where there are very similar instances. But if you're looking for the top three places to connect with individuals, it's Facebook. It's LinkedIn. And then there it the whole notion of Twitter which is more about text messaging than anything else.

The growth is just unbelievably fascinating. In some cases it's truly off the charts. The two rapid ones are Facebook and LinkedIn and they are really growing in the rate of about 35% to 40% per day interestingly enough because more people see others do it.
