Do you know how to properly handle an elder abuse incident? Find out for sure.
People age 80 and older are abused and neglected three times more often than younger populations, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse. But spotting abuse and intervening can become complicated with the elderly, considering factors such as disabilities, physical fragility, hearing impairment, and limited mobility . In this 1-hour audioconference, expert speaker Diane Ditmer, PhD, RN, CFN, DABFN, FACFE, SANE, will cover evidence-based material to help you recognize the signs of elder abuse and know how to react accordingly. You’ll walk away with an enhanced awareness and a stronger basis for care planning and referral.
Here's what you will learn:
- Why you should be worried: Discover the prevalence of criminal acts committed against the elderly and disabled.
- 6 Warning signs of elder abuse and neglect -- plus, risk factors you should watch to begin with.
- The importance of individualized examination techniques.
- Things to consider when examining victims with physical disabilities, cognitive impairments, communication limitations or sensory deficits.
- Your legal obligations for reporting abuse and neglect. There’s more to it than you think.
- What to incorporate into care planning for disabled victims. Hint: Think Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
- When to refer to more specialized support services.
Have additional questions? You have the floor with the speaker during an interactive Q&A.
