A weak patient communication program in your facility can be a recipe for disaster. Communication difficulties can be devastating in the healthcare setting and can create a huge barrier between patients and healthcare staff. Patients can have communication problems for all sorts of reasons, but usually speech or comprehension difficulties are present because of chronic or acute illnesses, medical interventions or language barriers of non-English speakers. The good news is that Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, strategies and techniques can ease communication in such situations -- but only if health care staff has access to them and understands how they work. Hear what communication expert Juli Pearson, SLP, has to share about AAC options in this 60-minute audioconference. Julie will tell you how she and her colleagues developed a program consisting of low-cost, easy-to-use tools for patients with communication problems in hospital and rehabilitation settings. She'll introduce you to an evaluation kit that SLPs can readily use to both evaluate patients and design communication treatment plans. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll learn: - What the Joint Commission says you should do to meet the communication needs of all patients -- and how AAC can help you comply.
- Golden tips on performing a needs assessments within your setting, plus, how to gather support and funding from management.
- Train your staff on AAC techniques with these easy-to-learn strategies.
- A handy one-page assessment hierarchy and evaluation tool for SLPs to use as a framework for AAC evaluation in the medical setting.
- Case study examples show you how communication tools could work in your setting.
- Two novel communication kits: One for all healthcare staff and one to help SLPs assess and treat patients with complex communication needs.
