A weak patient communication program in your facility can be a recipe for disaster. Communication difficulties can be devastating in the healthcare setting and can create a huge barrier between patients and healthcare staff. Patients can have communication problems for all sorts of reasons, but usually speech or comprehension difficulties are present because of chronic or acute illnesses, medical interventions or language barriers of non-English speakers. Julianne Trautman Pearson is a speech pathologist specializing in the hospital and rehab setting. She currently works at Boulder Community Hospital and has developed a program for AAC in the acute care setting. Pearson formerly worked at Duke University Medical Center and assisted with development of Duke’s AAC program. She has published and presented regionally and nationally on the topics of AAC, ALS, Aphasia and Dysphagia.
