Product Description
Heighten your awareness of abuse risk factors and learn how to report it to officials with these expert strategies
Five children die every day in the U.S. from child abuse and neglect, and 80% are 4 years old or younger. It’s up to healthcare practitioners, school personnel, and caregivers to be the first line of defense for at-risk children. Knowing what to look for and how to take appropriate action if abuse is occurring is critical to saving lives.
Join sexual assault forensics expert Dr. Dianne Ditmer, veteran clinical nurse educator and Certified Forensic Nurse, in this 60-minute session as she teaches you how to identify types of caregivers and environmental risk factors that could result in abuse. She'll instruct you on recognizing the wounds and diseases indicative of abuse and explain how to document and report findings to comply with mandatory reporting requirements. Dr. Ditmer will also provide you with strategies for collaborating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Here’s a sample of what you'll learn:
- The prevalence and incidence of criminal acts committed against children: What’s happening and how often it’s occurring.
- How to identify environmental, caregiver and child risk factors associated with abuse and neglect.
- How will I know what to look for? Find out how to evaluate injuries that are indicative of physical abuse including patterned injuries, fractures, contusions, burns and bites.
- Develop interview strategies to support your assessment and reporting of findings to law enforcement.
- Compare medical conditions and cultural practices that mimic and are often mistaken for child abuse.
- Learn about legal reporting requirements and what to document when you file a mandatory report of abuse or neglect to law enforcement or social services.
